North Korea-linked hacking groups have shattered all previous records for cryptocurrency theft in 2025, with blockchain analytics firm Elliptic reporting over $2 billion stolen so far this year. This unprecedented escalation pushes the regime’s cumulative crypto thefts beyond $6 billion, far surpassing the 2022 record of $1.35 billion.
Stolen funds are believed to fuel North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, providing critical financial support to one of the world’s most heavily sanctioned economies.
